During periods of lower consumption, natural gas is injected and stored underground. During the cold season, when demand rises significantly, these reserves are withdrawn and fed into the national gas transport system.

Depogaz’s activity more closely resembles the management of a national strategic reserve than the operation of a conventional company.
The importance of this mission became particularly evident following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Europe quickly realized that energy security could no longer be treated solely as an economic issue. Energy had become a critical component of national security and political stability.
In this context, the European Union established clear targets regarding gas storage levels ahead of each winter season. Romania has consistently been among the countries that successfully met these objectives, and Depogaz’s contribution to this achievement has been decisive.
In recent years, Depogaz has entered a new phase of development. While the company’s primary focus in the past was managing existing infrastructure, it is now undertaking an extensive modernization and expansion program.
One of the most significant investment directions concerns the development of the Bilciurești storage facility, with European co-financing. As Romania’s largest natural gas storage facility and one of the most important in this part of Europe. The projects currently underway aim to increase withdrawal capacity and enhance operational flexibility—essential elements in an energy environment characterized by rapid change and constant challenges.
At the same time, the company is investing heavily in digitalization and automation. Advanced technologies enable continuous monitoring of operations, process optimization, and enhanced safety standards. In a sector where reliability is paramount, such investments are essential to maintaining high performance.
Another major challenge lies in adapting to the evolving trends of the energy transition. Although Europe is pursuing emissions reductions and expanding renewable energy sources, natural gas is expected to remain a significant component of the European energy mix for a considerable period.
Moreover, Depogaz’s extensive experience in managing complex underground facilities may prove to be a valuable advantage in the future development of the hydrogen economy and emerging energy storage technologies.
