The National Institute for Infectious Diseases „Prof. Dr. Matei Balș”, Bucharest is one of the most valuable institutions within the Romanian academic and medical landscape, led by figures of national and international importance, Dr Adrian Gabriel Marinescu, the current Manager and also Assistant Lecturer at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy „Carol Davila” entering, successfully, the gallery of these Romanian medical assets.
A young physician, with complex academic and culturalbackground who built a life along with his wife, a renowned architect is known for his involvement in both the medical and social scene, thus promoting sacred Romanian cultural and social values.
A devotee of the motto „We cure with science, we treat with our soul”, Dr. Marinescu is also notorious for his public communication abilities, during the turning points of our social life, such as the critical COVID-19 epidemic. This, in particular, was a complicated and vulnerable period of time that sparked strong reactions in our society and changed, irreversibly, mentalities and behaviors.
During this time, as member and Coordinator of the Communication Team in the Institute he focused extensively and passionately on the delicate process of prompt information related to all aspects of the pandemic trying to curb the strong social response to a somewhat unknown phenomenon.
His consistent interventions, on all communication channels helped calm down the spirits by exposing in the public space solid, correct and beneficial data in due time, during such atypical times. These are critical moments for every society that need optimal management through a rigorous and rapid intervention.
After his promotion as Manager of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases „Prof. Dr. Matei Balș”, Dr. Marinescu took over a complex institution, whose reputation he continues to maintain at the highest standards by adding to the teams of physicians and nurses professionals that are empathetic, as well as by improving the medical activity and adding quality to patients’ lives, both throughout their admission in hospital as well as in its aftermath, until full recovery.
Establishing partnerships with various social institutions is, likewise, a concern whose main purpose is to provide powerful and integrated medical care for all our patients. His constant concern for qualitative medical services and the empathy toward patients enabled the latter’s sympathy for Dr. Marinescu while his fair and respectful manner of treating his fellow physicians attracted new colleagues in the large team of specialists in the Institute.
The continuous care invested in improving the academic environment in „Prof. Dr. Matei Bals” Institute created opportunities for many young physicians to collaborate with senior doctors in various nationally and internationally funded projects generating great results in the vast domain of infectious diseases. Furthermore, the Institute’s well- known commitment to social causes improved the situation of many vulnerable persons, especially in the area of HIV and drug consumption.
As member of the Infectious Diseases Committee at the Ministry of Health and former coordinator of the Technical Assistance and ART Programme Management Unit Dr. Marinescu oriented the hospital unit towards larger partnerships with specialized NGOs that deploy complex and sensitive activities within communities of undeserved people who live with HIV and have addiction problems, two serious public health issues that cannot and should not be ignored.
Dr. Adrian Gabriel Marinescu remains faithful to Hippocrates’ principle- Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity– while the drive of his entire clinical activity seems to be anchored in the classical saying – The greatness of a doctor lies not only in what he knows, but in how much relief he can provide.
