Ömer Tetik,
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Banca Transilvania

Few leaders have influenced the transformation of Romania’s banking system over the past decade as profoundly as Ömer Tetik. Under his leadership, Banca Transilvania became the market leader, expanded its footprint through strategic acquisitions, and accelerated its digitalization process, strengthening its role as a key partner of the Romanian economy. His professional journey reflects a rare combination of strategic vision, managerial discipline, and the ability to turn opportunities into lasting results.

In the financial industry, an institution’s performance is often measured by the numbers it generates. Beyond balance sheets, however, long-term success is built by people, by their vision, and by their ability to anticipate the changes that shape the economy. In the case of Banca Transilvania, one of the names most closely associated with the institution’s remarkable evolution over the last decade is Ömer Tetik, the leader who oversaw the transformation of a strong bank into a financial group that has become a benchmark for the entire Romanian banking system.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Ömer Tetik completed his academic education in Turkey, graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Middle East Technical University, one of the region’s most respected higher education institutions. His economic training laid the foundation for an international career spanning three different markets—Turkey, Russia, and Romania—each offering distinct experiences and perspectives on the financial world.

His professional career began at ATA Securities in İzmir, where he gained direct exposure to financial markets and investment mechanisms. He later joined Finansbank in Istanbul, working in treasury operations, an area that requires a deep understanding of risk management, liquidity, and capital markets. The experience gained there provided a solid foundation for the challenges that lay ahead.

In 1997, he took over the management of the Treasury and Capital Markets Department of Finansbank Moscow, during a period when the Russian economy was undergoing profound transformations. Managing financial operations in a volatile and constantly changing environment strengthened his profile as a results-oriented executive and enhanced his ability to make strategic decisions in complex circumstances.

The year 2000 marked the beginning of his connection with Romania. Settling in Bucharest, Ömer Tetik continued his career at Credit Europe Bank, previously known as Finansbank Romania. He held successive leadership roles, and the experience he accumulated within the local banking system gave him an in-depth understanding of the Romanian economic environment, entrepreneurs’ needs, and the characteristics of a rapidly developing market.

In 2013, he assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of Banca Transilvania, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the institution’s history. At that time, BT was already a respected bank and an important player in the Romanian economy, but the following years would bring an unprecedented acceleration in its development.

A Vision Built on Growth and Adaptation Ömer Tetik’s tenure coincided with a period during which the global banking industry was facing major changes. Digitalization, new regulations, evolving consumer behavior, and the consolidation of financial markets forced banking institutions to rethink their development models.

In this context, the strategy implemented at Banca Transilvania was not aimed solely at increasing the organization’s size. The objective was to build a financial institution capable of responding to new economic realities and remaining relevant for future generations of customers.

Under his leadership, the bank strengthened its presence across all major market segments, developing a structure tailored to the needs of large corporations, small and medium-sized enterprises, independent professionals, and individual clients alike. Today, the institution’s activities are organized around four main business lines—Corporate, SME, Retail, and the Medical Division—a structure that reflects the attention given to each customer category.

At the same time, BT consolidated its position as one of the leading financiers of the Romanian economy. This evolution was not the result of a single strategic decision but rather the consequence of a coherent approach based on sustainable growth, continuous investment, and ongoing adaptation to market changes.

Those who work with Ömer Tetik often describe him as a results-oriented leader who remains attentive to long-term development. In a sector where decisions must be made quickly, he has consistently promoted the idea that performance cannot be separated from responsibility and that organizational growth depends equally on technology, processes, and people. This approach has contributed to strengthening an organizational culture built on trust, autonomy, and collaboration.

The results achieved by Banca Transilvania Group confirm the effectiveness of the strategic directions adopted in recent years.

The bank serves nearly five million active customers, reinforcing its position as the market leader. The sustained pace of attracting new customers reflects both the trust enjoyed by the institution and its ability to address increasingly diverse needs.

For Ömer Tetik, the success of a bank is closely linked to the success of its customers, and sustainable development cannot exist outside a healthy and competitive economy.

This philosophy explains the attention devoted to entrepreneurship, investment, financial education, and banking inclusion. In recent years, BT has assumed an active role in supporting economic development and expanding access to financial services for increasingly diverse customer segments.

Looking back, the evolution of Ömer Tetik and Banca Transilvania represents one of the most relevant success stories in Romania’s financial sector. It is the story of a leader who understood that sustainable growth is built through vision, discipline, and the ability to turn change into a competitive advantage. Under his leadership, Banca Transilvania has not only become Romania’s largest bank but also one of the essential drivers of national economic development, demonstrating that long-term performance is achieved through a balance of ambition, responsibility, and trust.
