Prof. Leonard Azamfirei MD PhD,
Rector of George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Targu Mures

Prof. Leonard Azamfirei stands out as a visionary leader. Rector of G.E. Palade UMFST Targu Mureș since 2012, he has guided the university through a period of deep transformation: opening it to the world, modernising medical education and placing innovation in the service of people.

Trained as a medical doctor in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, Prof. Leonard Azamfirei brought into all his leadership the reflexes of his medical specialty: ethical responsibility, trust in teamwork and the courage to act when every second matters. Additional studies in Law and Administrative Sciences strengthened his ability to understand systems and connect education, healthcare and innovation into a coherent vision.

Romanian Excellence Beyond Borders

Under his leadership, G.E Palade UMFST Targu Mures has become one of Romania’s most dynamic higher education institutions, merging medical tradition, technological ambition, multilingual education and international reach.

The Hamburg Campus in Germany remains one of its landmark achievements. Opened in 2019, it became the first branch of a Romanian university established abroad, bringing into the heart of Europe a model of medical education now serving more than 800 students from 50 countries. The first graduating class in 2025, together with the Silver Medal at the German Medical Award the same year, confirms that Romanian education can inspire beyond borders.

Human-Centered Digital Medicine

Training doctors for the world goes hand in hand with the courage to build, at home, the medicine of the future. This is the logic behind his initiative: the G.E. Palade University Clinical Hospital, Romania’s first smart hospital and as a pilot model for a fully digital, AI-supported healthcare ecosystem where technology strengthens the human dimension of care.

In an age of algorithms and automation, he advocates for personalised medicine that keeps empathy, ethics and dignity at its core, reflected also by developing the first Master’s degree in Medical Humanities in Romania and Central Europe.

A University without Walls

What further defines his leadership is a set of convictions put into practice. He believes that a university must be comprehensive and interconnected, and created through the institutional merger a broader academic environment where medicine, technology, law and the humanities engage with each other in programs and projects.

The same idea is visible in UniCity: “the city within the city”, a concept through which the university is imagined not as a traditional campus, but as an integrated ecosystem with residential spaces, research hubs, simulation centres, a modern hospital and a pharmacy, sports facilities and green areas designed as a living whole.

A Voice in International Medicine and Global Collaboration

Prof. Leonard Azamfirei has also shaped medical and academic life through numerous professional roles. He is a member of the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences, Vice-President of the Romanian Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, President of the Romanian Society of Applied Simulation in Medicine and President of the Romanian Foundation of Anesthesia and Intensive Care. Internationally, he represents Romania in the European Medical Association and Europe in the Council of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists, where serves on the Pain Management Committee.

As Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Critical Care Medicine, he contributes to the international visibility of critical care research, while his academic record and sustained research activity reinforce this commitment. His career has been honoured with Doctor Honoris Causa titles from medical universities in Tbilisi and Chișinău, as well as with Medals and Diplomas of Honor across borders and fields.

Through more than 100 invited lectures at international conferences, forums and universities, he has carried a Romanian medical and academic perspective to audiences around the world. His work within DIVERSE European University Alliance and collaborations with more than 185 universities reflect the belief that the university must remain open to the world, while contributing its own model of excellence.

The Future, Made Possible

Prof. Leonard Azamfirei’s work demonstrates that institutions matter when they expand what people and communities can become to serve the common good. He has given the university direction and confidence to build ahead of its time. In shaping a Romanian model of medical education, innovation and human-centred practice, he gives concrete expression to the university’s motto, E pluribus unum — Out of many, one: bringing different fields, people and ambitions into one shared vision of the future, not only awaited, but imagined and built.
