Few physicians have succeeded in combining clinical excellence, academic achievement, and university leadership at the highest level. Prof. Dr. Ioanel Sinescu, a full member of the Romanian Academy since 2011, is among the personalities who have decisively shaped the evolution of Romanian urology and kidney transplantation, building over more than four decades a career defined by excellence, innovation, and the training of entire generations of specialists.
Professor Sinescu believes that medical excellence is built through continuous education, investment in physician training, and the development of reference centers capable of providing in Romania the most advanced treatments available internationally.
Born on December 8, 1951, in the commune of Movileni, Iași County, he demonstrated from his formative years the discipline and rigor that would later define his professional journey. After completing his secondary education at “C. Negruzzi” Theoretical High School No. 3 in Iași and at the “Ștefan cel Mare” Military High School in Câmpulung Moldovenesc, he was admitted to the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest. He graduated in 1977 as valedictorian of the Military Section, with the remarkable average grade of 9.97, an achievement that already foreshadowed an exceptional career.
In 1979, he successfully competed for a junior assistant position in the Department of Urology. He had learned that Professor Proca was preparing to perform the first kidney transplant in Romania. It was something entirely new.
His passion for research and high-complexity surgery materialized in 1988, when he defended his doctoral thesis dedicated to the use of abdominal aortography and selective arteriography in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract diseases.
This marked the beginning of an outstanding scientific career that would contribute significantly to the development of modern directions in Romanian urology.
Over the years, Professor Sinescu furthered his professional training in some of the world’s most prestigious medical centers. He completed advanced fellowships and specialization programs in the United States, France, Germany, Israel, China, and South Africa, acquiring expertise in urological microsurgery, urologic oncology, reconstructive surgery, endourology, and kidney transplantation. These international experiences provided him with access to the latest medical techniques and concepts, which he later introduced and developed in Romania.
His name is closely associated with the Fundeni Clinical Institute, where he spent most of his professional career and which he played a decisive role in transforming into a regional benchmark in uronephrology and kidney transplantation.
Since 1997, he has led the Center for Uronephrology and Renal Transplantation, one of the most important centers of its kind in Eastern Europe, and between 1997 and 2006 he served as the hospital’s Medical Director.
Alongside his clinical activity, Professor Sinescu built an impressive academic career. In 1998, he became a full professor at the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, and between 2004 and 2012 he served as Vice-Rector. During two consecutive terms, from 2012 to 2020, he was Rector of Romania’s most prestigious medical university, Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, contributing significantly to the modernization and internationalization of Romanian medical education. Today, he holds the title of Professor Emeritus and serves as Head of the Department of Urological Surgery at the Fundeni Clinical Institute.
His professional activity is defined by several areas of excellence: kidney transplantation, urologic oncologic surgery, complex interventions for renal cancers with cavo-cardiac extension, reconstructive surgery, endourology, and microsurgery. He also made essential contributions to the development of modern orthotopic substitution techniques following radical cystectomy, as well as to multidisciplinary approaches for complex oncological pathologies.
His international prestige is confirmed by his participation in more than 70 congresses, symposia, and scientific courses held across several continents. He has delivered more than 45 state-of-the-art lectures at prestigious medical events and has repeatedly been invited to serve as moderator or session chair at international specialty congresses.
Beyond titles and positions, Professor Sinescu is recognized as one of the principal architects of the modern Romanian school of urology. Through his medical, academic, and managerial work, he has contributed to the training of numerous specialists and to the development of programs that have brought Romanian medicine closer to the standards of the world’s leading university medical centers.
His career stands as an example of a life dedicated to professional excellence, in which individual achievement has been transformed into a benefit for the entire medical community and for the thousands of patients who have benefited from his expertise.
