Professor Anca Dana Buzoianu, MD, PhD,
Rector of the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca

Professor Anca Dana Buzoianu, MD, PhD, Rector of the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, is one of the most respected academic leaders in Romanian medical education. Currently serving her second term as Rector, she is a physician, professor, researcher and institutional builder who has shaped generations of students and contributed decisively to the modernization and international recognition of one of Romania’s most prestigious medical universities.

Her career has been marked by a series of pioneering moments. Professor Buzoianu was the first woman to become Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Cluj-Napoca, a position to which she was first elected in 2008 and subsequently re-elected for two more terms. In 2020, she became Rector of the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, the first woman to hold this position at a Romanian university of medicine and pharmacy. In 2024, she started a second term as Rector, confirming the academic community’s trust in her vision, leadership and commitment to the university’s continued development. Her leadership has always been defined not by symbolism alone, but by competence, consistency and results.

For Professor Buzoianu, medicine has never been only a profession. It is a vocation grounded in responsibility, knowledge and service to people. Trained as a primary care physician in pediatrics and clinical pharmacology, she has combined clinical understanding with academic rigor, always keeping the patient, the student and the future of healthcare at the center of her work.

As Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, she coordinated important reforms that aligned medical education in Cluj-Napoca with Western European models. Under her leadership, the Faculty of Medicine became the first medical faculty in Central and South-Eastern Europe to receive the CIDMEF Label of Quality Recognition, a certification that acknowledges the quality and performance of medical education according to the standards of the International Conference of Deans and Faculties of Medicine of French Expression. The faculty also became the only internationally accredited medical school in Romania by AMSE/ASIIN, confirming its strong position in European medical education.

Her contribution to academic innovation includes the modernization of curricula, the introduction of educational models later adopted by other medical schools in Romania, and the development of projects that strengthened the institutional profile of the university. She has promoted a culture of quality, openness and international cooperation, understanding that a modern medical university must be both deeply rooted in its tradition and fully connected to the global academic community.

As Rector, Professor Buzoianu has continued this vision through strategic investments in education, research, infrastructure and internationalization. The university has expanded its role in European academic networks, strengthened partnerships with medical and research institutions, and continued to invest in facilities that support modern learning, simulation, translational research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her leadership reflects a clear belief: the future of medicine depends on universities capable of educating not only excellent professionals, but also responsible, empathetic and adaptable people.

Professor Buzoianu’s scientific work is closely connected to pharmacology, clinical pharmacology and personalized medicine. Her research interests include experimental pharmacology in the study of pain and inflammation, neuropsychopharmacology, pharmacogenetics, neuronal neuroplasticity and personalized therapy. In recent years, her scientific activity has focused on the role of genetic polymorphisms in response to treatment, including pharmacogenetics related to oral anticoagulants, biological therapies and neurotropic medication. She is the author of six books as sole author and has published numerous scientific papers in national and international journals.

Her academic and professional activity has been recognized through many distinctions. Among them are the National Order of Merit in the rank of Knight, awarded by the French Republic for her contribution to the development of Francophony in the academic and medical environment, the Excellence Award at the “Sommet européen d’affaires franco-roumain”, the “Transylvanian Cross”, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of “Ovidius” University, the Medal of Honour of the Order of Physicians of France, and several awards for educational innovation, educational management and outstanding contribution to medical education.

Beyond titles and distinctions, Professor Anca Dana Buzoianu’s career speaks about the power of perseverance, integrity and meaningful leadership. She has often emphasized that success is not validated by gender, but by competence. At the same time, her path has become an important reference for women in academia and medicine, showing that leadership built on knowledge, courage and fairness can open doors for future generations.

At the “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, Professor Buzoianu continues to lead with the conviction that medical education must remain deeply human, scientifically rigorous and internationally connected. Her work reflects the values of a university that looks toward the future while honoring the legacy of the great medical school of Cluj: excellence, responsibility, innovation and service to society.
